The Bedford

Background & Brief

The Bedford in Balham is a prominent Hotel, Pub, and music venue. Having had the likes of Ed Sheeran, Lola Young, Sam Smith, Eddie Izzard and Michael McIntyre all perform, this is no ordinary London pub. It is laid out across five floors, and consists of five bars, a ballroom, the clubroom and a hotel.

Fire Response UK was commissioned by the electrical contractors during a multi-million-pound refurbishment to design, supply, install and commission a fire alarm system for this unique venue. We were also asked to commission the disabled refuge communication system and supply fire extinguishers for the premises.

Design, scope & Process

We had been told early on in the consultation process that in some areas of the building it would not be possible to get cables to all the device locations we had specified. We therefore set about the design of a hybrid wireless and wired fire alarm system.

The system had to offer full protection to all areas of the building (BS 5839‑1) whilst also satisfying DDA or the Equality Act (2010) recommendations as well as current wiring regulations (BS7671).

Completion

The whole project was completed on time and within the budget.

The wireless fire alarm devices on the ground floor worked in perfect harmony with the wired fire alarm in the basement, club room, ballroom room hallways and bedrooms.

The disabled refuge communication system allows someone in the dedicated refuge area to call for assistance in the event of fire when they are unable to use the lift.
